Terps Maintain Eighth Place After Day Three At ACCs

    COLLEGE PARK, Md.- After the third day of competition at the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, Maryland has tallied 163 points and holds on to an eighth-place standing. Florida State leads the competition with 500 points going into the final events on Saturday.

    Prelims:
    In the first event of this morning's prelims, senior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) swam a season-best time of 3:59.08 in the 400-yard individual medley for the 15th-place spot in tonight's consolation final.

    For the 200 freestyle, freshman Chris Rouchard (Westlake, Ohio) finished with a career-best time of 1:41.78 for the 24th-place position in the bonus consolation final. Junior Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) also established a career-best time of 1:42.26 in the event for a 26th-place finish and an alternate position in finals. Freshman Kevin Reardon (Voorhees, N.J.) notched a career best of 1:42.28 for 28th place, freshman Brian Honore (West Windsor, N.J.) finished with a season best of 1:42.70 for 29th and freshman Ryan Greene established a career best of 1:44.04 in the 200 free for 34th place.

    Freshman Aleksandar Damjanic (Zagreb, Croatia) led the Terrapins in the prelim for the 100 butterfly. Damjanic swam a season best of 48.86 for the sixth-place seed in the championship final. Junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) topped his career best with a time of 50.14, good for the 24th-place position in the bonus consolation final. Also establishing career-best times in the 100 fly were sophomore Kyle Glennon (Jarrettsville, Md.) and junior Jake DiPiazza (Silver Spring, Md.). Glennon swam a 50.71 (33rd) and DiPiazza finished with a time of 51.41 (38th).

    In the prelim for the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.) was the top finisher for Maryland with a season-best time of 57.32 for the 15th-place position in the consolation heat for tonight's final. Right behind Cullen was senior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) with his career-best time of 57.33 for the 16th-place spot in the consolation final. Sophomore Andy Dilz (Cincinatti, Ohio) earned a spot in the bonus consolation final for the 100 breast with an 18th-place finish in the prelim (57.38).

    To close out this morning's prelim session, sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co., Pa.) notched a spot in the consolation final for the 100 backstroke. Kim swam a career-best time of 50.03 finishing 13th. Damjanic went on to finish 18th in the 100 back prelim for a spot in the bonus consolation final with a season-best time of 50.94. Thomasson finished in 27th for the 100 back prelim with a season best of 52.34.

    Finals:
    Miller went on to score two points for the Terps in the 400 IM with a 15th-place finish in the consolation final for the event (4:00.51).

    In the following event, Damjanic led Maryland in the 100 fly championship final with a sixth-place finish and season-best time of 48.71. The Terps collected 13 points from Damjanic's finish. Thomasson went on to set a career best topping his prelim time for a 19th-place finish in the bonus consolation final for the 100 fly (49.78).

    For the bonus consolation final in the 200 free, Rouchard swam a 1:42.10 for 22nd place, followed by Reardon in 23rd (1:42.34) and Golaszewski in 24th (1:42.86).

    Cullen went on to score five points for the Terps in the 100 breast after a 12th-place swim and career-best time of 56.44. Shepard finished in 16th place earning one point for Maryland with a career best over his prelim time (57.27).

    Kim won the consolation final for the 100 back finishing ninth overall. Kim established another career best in the event (48.93) and earned nine points for the Terps.

    Maryland closed out the third day of ACCs with a fourth-place finish and season-best swim in the 400 medley relay. The squad of Kim, Cullen, Damjanic and senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) swam a 3:18.70 in the event for 30 points Florida State won the relay with an NCAA B-cut time of 3:14.25.

    Individual event winners tonight included Pat Mellors in the 400 IM (Virginia; NCAA A-cut time of 3:45.47), Scott Beard in the 100 fly (Virginia Tech; NCAA B-cut time of 47.40), Hank Browning in the 200 free (North Carolina; NCAA B-cut time of 1:36.43), Vanja Rogulj in the 100 breast (Virginia; NCAA A-cut time of 53.14) and Jarryd Botha in the 100 back (Florida State; NCAA B-cut time of 48.26).

    The final day of competition in the Men's 2007 ACC Championships will begin tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. with preliminaries in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 1650 free. Finals for these events in addition to the 400 free relay will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Follow tomorrow's competition with live scoring linked to this release and to the Maryland men's swimming and diving schedule. The meet will also be broadcasted live on ACC Select.
