CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - University of Virginia starter Jacob Thompson pitched his second complete game of the season, allowing just four hits as the Cavaliers blanked the University of Maryland, 14-0, in the two teams' series opener Friday evening at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers (35-10, 14-7 ACC) snapped a three-game losing streak, as they out-hit the Terrapins (23-22, 7-15) by a 17-4 margin.
Thompson (10-0) picked up his tenth victory of the season, while Terps starter Kevin Biringer (3-9) dropped the decision after allowing three runs on four hits in three innings of work.
Right fielder Brandon Marsh led the Cavaliers' charge, as he was 4-for-5 with six runs batted in on the day. Joining Marsh with four hits was designated hitter Jeremy Farrell. For the Terps, four different players each recorded a hit, as Steve Braun, AJ Casario, Dan Benick, and Joe Palumbo all notched base hits.
Virginia plated its first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning, when catcher Beau Seabury lined a solo shot over the left field fence. The Cavaliers expanded the lead to 3-0 an inning later, as Marsh singled up the middle, scoring two runs.
The Cavaliers added four runs to their total in the fourth, starting with a leadoff triple by second baseman David Adams. Adams scored on the play when a fielding error allowed him to cross the plate. Greg Miclat and Marsh each recorded two-out doubles, with Miclat notching one RBI while Marsh's slicing shot to right center field brought home two UVa baserunners.
In the fifth inning, the Cavs displayed more offensive firepower, scoring six runs to take a 13-0 lead. Virginia batted around in the frame, highlighted by Marsh's two-RBI double and first baseman Sean Doolittle's base hit to left center that scored a pair of runs.
UVa scored its final run in the seventh when Patrick Wingfield hit a solo home run to left field.
Maryland will try to even the series at one game apiece tomorrow evening when it faces the Cavaliers at 7 p.m. Senior southpaw Casey Baron will have the call for the Terps from Davenport Field.
