CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Maryland baseball team matched the No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers through nine innings, but a base hit by catcher Beau Seabury spoiled the Terrapins' upset bid as they fell 3-2 in ten innings Saturday night at Davenport Field.
Virginia (36-10, 15-7 ACC) earned the series win despite being out-hit by a 12-10 margin. Maryland (23-23, 7-16) saw every starting position player reach base, but could not capitalize on a number of scoring opportunities as it dropped its fifth straight ACC series.
Reliever Jake Rule (3-3) earned the win after two scoreless innings, while Brett Cecil (5-4) took the loss for the Terps. Cecil, who came on in relief to start the eighth inning, allowed the game-winning run in the tenth inning after holding the Cavalier bats scoreless in the eighth and ninth.
The UVa offense was led by second baseman David Adams, who was 3-for-5 on the day. Maryland saw multiple-hit games from senior Jon Greenwich and sophomore Mike Murphy.
The Terps struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Junior Joe Palumbo singled to bring home sophomore Mike Moss, who doubled with one out.
Guyer tied the game in the bottom of the frame, as he led off with a double and scored on a groundout double play. In the third, Virginia took the lead with an RBI double by first baseman Sean Doolittle, who then advanced to third base as Greg Miclat was tagged out at home. The next batter, Guyer, then popped up to catcher Chad Durakis to end the threat.
With one swing, though, junior Nick Jowers evened the score at two in the top of the fourth inning as he sent a ball deep over the left field fence, his second home run of the season.
The game remained deadlocked for the next five innings, as Terps starter Casey Baron kept the Virginia offense at bay through his seven-inning, seven-hit outing. Rule and Michael Schwimer combined for five shutout innings in relief of starter Matt Packer. Packer allowed both Terrapin runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
Seaubury recorded his second hit of the day in the bottom of the tenth and gave the Cavaliers the series victory as Brandon Marsh crossed the plate on a sharp line drive down the third base line.
Maryland will look to take the series finale Sunday afternoon when Ryan Moorer will take the mound. First pitch from Davenport Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
