Maryland Wraps Up Competition in Pittsburgh

The men's swimming and diving team (3-4) finished their second day of competition, placing above Villanova with a score of 267.50-72.50, but falling to Penn State (228-116), Missouri (214-130) and Pittsburgh (178-170).

Dong Kim held the Terps only top spot of the day in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.36. Nick Cordes finished second in the race with a time of 20.76.

The Terrapins had three top-ten finishes in the 200-yard butterfly. Roger Dent (1:55.70) and Eric Thomasson (1:56.08) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, while Aleksandar Damjanic (1:57.50) swam a 10th place finish.

In the 500-yard freestyle relay, Chris Rouchard finished fourth with a time of 4:39.58. Captain Ken Golaszewski (4:48.17) and Brian Honore (4:48.87) also competed, finishing ninth and 11th, respectively.

Maryland had a third place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. Dong Kim, Eric Cullen, Damjanic and Cordes finished with a final time of 3:26.85. Chris Sanford, John Closs, Thomasson and Matt Gruszecki also competed, placing seventh with a time of 3:31.48.

Sanford finished third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:53.14.

Andy Dilz (1:55.61) placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley, with Cullen (1:58.54) and Mitch Challacombe (1:59.58) having 10th and 11th place finishes, respectively.

Maryland finished the day capturing second in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Kim, Ryan Greene, Cordes and Dilz boasted a time of 3:04.40.

In the diving competition, Derek Hock finished ninth of 11 with a score of 225.75.

The Terps will be back in action on Saturday, January 26 for their ACC season opener against NC State.
