COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Sean Schimmel-era of Maryland swimming and diving officially begins this weekend as the Terps play host to Johns Hopkins on Friday at 3 p.m. before welcoming former Terrapins for the Alumni Meet on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium.
Schimmel, who became the eighth head coach in Maryland swimming and diving history in May, boasts 14 returnees on the women's side and 21 on the men's for the 2008-09 season. The Terps have had a busy summer, placing six athletes in the Olympic Trials, including seniors Dong Kim and Eric Cullen, juniors Jen Vogel, Nina Rossi and Patti DeScenza and freshman Sean Stewart.
Maryland hit the pool last weekend, competing in the Red-Black Invite (USS Meet) at Eppley. Friday's dual meet against Johns Hopkins will be the first to count towards Maryland's record this season. The women's squad defeated JHU last season, 246-137, while registering 13 top finishes. The men were led by Kirk Jackson and Andy Dilz, who each won two individual events, en route to a win, 154-108.
