Terps Swimming and Diving Faces Intrastate Rivals Towson and UMBC Saturday

Nov. 14, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terps swimming and diving team will spend its second weekend in a row at Eppley Recreation Natatorium when they play host to intrastate rivals Towson and UMBC at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Maryland women head into the weekend with a 3-2 record after splitting a meet against George Mason and North Carolina last weekend. The Terps upended the Patriots, 215.00-84.00, but fell to the Tar Heels, 181.00-118.00. Jen Vogel had a tremendous day in the pool, securing wins in the 100 fly and 200 IM. The 200 free relay team of Yelena Skalinskaya, Annie Fittin, Jackie Davidson and Blair Cross won its third consecutive race, while Fittin also won the 100 back. Freshman Alisa Kurbatova won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

On the men's side, Maryland sits at 2-3 in 2008 and also earned a split last weekend, defeating George Mason, 200.50-98.50, but fell to ACC perennial power North Carolina. Andy Dilz had a career-day in the pool, winning the 50 free with a personal-best time of 20.68 and leading off for the first-place 200 free relay.

Towson has been idle since the CAA Pod meet two weeks ago, as the women's team enters the weekend at 7-0 while the men are 1-5. Pacing the Towson men's team are seniors Ryan Godfrey and Eric Pinno. Godfrey finished second in the Tigers' last outing in the 400 IM and 1650 free and Pinno captured the 50 free. The Towson women have won 15 consecutive dual meets dating back to last season.

UMBC is an even 2-2 in men's action and are led by senior Evan Roseberry, who won three events in the squad's last outing setting a season-best time in the 1000-yard freestyle with a mark of 9:42.85 and earning wins in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.84) and 500-yard freestyle (4:44.44). The Retriever women are 3-3 and are paced by sophomore Rebecca Godwin and junior Tereza Kaplanova, who each won two events to lead the Retrievers against Binghamton last week.

Due to football game-day parking, fans will be redirected to the Terrapin Trail Garage. Parking is $15. Admission to Saturday's meet is free.
