Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team dropped the second game of its two-game series against the 19th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers Saturday, 5-4, despite putting up four runs against Virginia pitcher Pat McAnaney, who entered the game with a 1.61 ERA.

Maryland (20-16, 5-12 ACC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when catcher Mike Moss (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson), who was making his first start of the season, jumped on a hanging McAnaney breaking ball and launched a two-out, three-run home run to center field.

However, McAnaney settled down afterward and the Cavaliers' bullpen got out of one big jam to earn the win.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the fifth, Virginia (28-9, 10-7 ACC) grabbed its first lead of the game when first baseman Jeremy Farrell matched Moss' homer with a three-run blast of his own off Ian Schwalenberg (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) to give the Cavs a 5-3 advantage.

After struggling with McAnaney after Moss' homer, the Terps mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning. Joe Palumbo (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) led off with a single, forcing Virginia to take out McAnaney for Matt Packer.

Steve Braun (Granada Hills, Calif./Pierce CC) greeted Packer with a double to right-center field, putting the tying run at the plate with no outs. Unfortunately for the Terps, they could only score one on a Mike Murphy (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) RBI groundout.

Virginia closer Michael Schwimer retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 10th save of the season.

Senior Mike Sufczynski (Darnestown, Md./St. John's) started on the mound for the Terps, but lasted only 2 1/3 innings.

Schwalenberg took the loss for the Terps, dropping him to 1-2 on the season. McAnaney earned the win, improving to 4-1 on the year.

The Terps will try to salvage game three of the series at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Kevin Biringer (Albuquerque, N.M./Bradley University) will start for the Terps against Andrew Carraway.
