Swinson Earns NCBWA Pitcher of the Week Honor

May 20, 2008

DALLAS - Maryland sophomore pitcher Scott Swinson was named the Pro-Line Athletic National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association Tuesday afternoon, giving him two national pitcher-of-the-week awards in the last two days.

Swinson was also named the Atlantic Coast Conference and Collegiate Baseball Pitcher of the Week Monday after throwing the sixth no-hitter in school history last Tuesday at Delaware.

A right-handed pitcher from Ellicott City, Md., Swinson struck out a career-high 10 batters against the Blue Hens last week, giving the Terps their 30th win of the season in the season finale. The victory gave Maryland baseball its second 30-win season in program history.

The Terps defeated the Blue Hens, 4-0, in the game and Swinson allowed only three base runners on two walks and a hit-batsman. Swinson faced two batters over the minimum in the game.

Swinson's no-hitter was the sixth in school history and first solo no-hitter since 1992, when John Rayne no-hit Virginia. It was the first solo no-hitter and shutout since Rich Fillings did so against Clemson in 1972.

The win was Swinson's fifth of the season, giving him the most on the team and his second complete-game victory of the season.
