Brewers Press Release
ST. LOUIS -
Former University of Maryland infielder Steve Braun signed a professional contract with the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday, according to a press release on the Brewers' Web site.
Braun will join his brother, Ryan Braun, the reigning National League Rookie of the Year and a starter in this year's All-Star Game in the Brewers' organization.
Braun hit .261 in three seasons with the Terps and was a standout middle infielder, rotating between shortstop and second base.
Braun was not selected in last month's Major League Baseball Draft. However, the Brewers have a need for middle infielders in their farm system, according to the team's press release.
"He's really good defensively and he can run," Ryan Braun stated in the press release. "He's a good athlete, he just never really hit, which is the reason he didn't get drafted. The ability has always been there and he always works hard. It's just a matter of putting it all together.
Braun is expected to report the Brewers' advanced rookie league affiliate in Helena, Mont. by the end of the week.
