COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Andrew Relihan provided the Maryland men's swimming and diving team with its first trip to the podium Thursday night as the freshman took third in the 200 IM in school-record time on day two of the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium.
Relihan's 200 IM time (1:46.03) broke the previous school record set in 2005 by nearly two seconds as the Brookeville, Md., native picked up an NCAA B-cut qualifying mark in the event as well.
"We talked about swimming with Maryland pride today and Andrew's swim was a great example of that," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "It was just awesome."
The 200 IM record was not the only to fall Thursday, as Brian Honore now sits atop Maryland's record book in the 500 free after touching the wall in 4:23.27 in a prelim race. Junior Chris Rouchard also put in a solid performance in the distance event, tallying a lifetime NCAA B-cut qualifying time (4:23.79) in the bonus consolation.
In what proved to be a very fast 200 free relay across the board, Maryland secured its third school record of the evening (1:19.91) in addition to an NCAA B-cut time. The Maryland team of Mitch Challacombe, Andy Dilz, Andy Mears and Stuart Butts finished sixth. Challacombe's 20.11 50-split was the tops for the Terps this season.
"We are competing at a very high level right now," Schimmel said. "We are primed and ready to go...our best sessions are yet to come."
Maryland heads back to the pool for prelims at 11 a.m. sitting in seventh-place in the team standings. Virginia leads the way heading into day three of competition.
