Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Dan Benick went 2-for-4 with a two-run double as the University of Maryland baseball team was defeated by Boston College, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Shipley Field to give the Eagles the rubber game of the three-game weekend series.

The Terrapins fell to 10-11 with the loss and 3-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Boston College improved to 13-6 and 4-3 in the ACC.

The Eagles scored a single run in the top of the first inning, getting a two-out RBI single from third baseman Mickey Wiswall.

Maryland took its only lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning on Benick's two-run double off the center-field wall. Following Benick's double and a subsequent walk, Boston College starting pitcher Mike Dennhardt was relieved by Kevin Moran. Moran came in and induced a double-play ball from Alfredo Rodriguez to end the Terps' threat with only two runs scoring.

Boston College got both runs back in the top of the third and never trailed again. With two outs and a runner on second, catcher Tony Sanchez doubled off the left-field wall to tie the score. Mike Belfiore followed Sanchez with another RBI double off the left-field wall.

The Eagles scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings and the bullpen thwarted a couple Maryland rallies to hold on for the 5-2 victory.

Moran earned the win for Boston College, throwing 4 2/3 shutout innings. Eric Potter started and took the loss for the Terps, but delivered a solid outing, giving up three runs in five innings with six strikeouts and no walks. Belfiore came in to pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning and finished the game to earn his fifth save.

Sanchez and Maryland third baseman Mike Murphy were ejected from the game after exchanging words at the end of the third inning, forcing both dugouts to separate the players. The remainder of the game was played without incident.

The Terps are at George Mason on Tuesday and return home Wednesday to face UMBC.
