COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland baseball team plays a pair of home midweek games at Shipley Field this week, beginning with Delaware at 3 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a 3 p.m. Wednesday clash with UMES.
The Terrapins are 4-7 this season, with all four wins coming at home and all seven losses on the road. The Terps were swept last weekend at No. 9 Georgia Tech.
Delaware (6-5) brings a potent offense to College Park as the Blue Hens are hitting .349 as a team with 20 team home runs through 11 games. Jared Olson leads the team with five home runs. Bill Merkler has four home runs and a team-high 18 RBIs. Carlos Alonso is the Blue Hens' leading hitter, batting .457.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Eric Potter (0-0, 6.00) will be called upon to slow down Delaware's offense. The Blue Hens have not yet announced a starting pitcher, but the staff is struggling this season, allowing nearly eight earned runs per game.
The Terps swept three meetings with the Hens last season and own a 10-6-1 advantage in the all-time series. Maryland finished last season with a win at Delaware, as Scott Swinson tossed a no-hitter to defeat the Hens and clinch a 30-win season for the Terps.
The UMES Hawks are off to a 2-11 start this season and are hitting only .237 as a team while pitching to an 8.97 team ERA. Carl Huber, Wdnesday's scheduled starting pitcher, is 0-1 with an ERA of 18.00. Maryland will start either freshman Sander Beck or sophomore Blair Delean.
The Terps are 37-1 in the all-time series against the Hawks.
Admission to all midweek games is free. Live radio coverage for both games will be available at WMUCSports.com.
