Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Maryland baseball team dropped the rubber game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at No. 10 Virginia, 17-2, losing the series, two games to one.

The Cavaliers (26-5, 8-5 ACC) scored two runs in the top of the first inning against Maryland starter Matt Fullerton. Phil Gosselin drove in a run with a double and Dan Grovatt brought home the second run with a sacrifice fly.

Fullerton retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the second, but couldn't get the final out. After a pair of walks, a double and a single brought in two runs, Fullerton was relieved by Sander Beck. With the bases loaded, John Hicks lined an RBI single off shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez's glove, giving the Cavaliers a 5-0 lead. The damage was not done, though. Catcher Franco Valdes capped the two-out rally with a grand slam to left-center field to put Virginia up 9-0.

Gosselin increased Virginia's lead to 12-0 with a three-run, third inning home run off Jensen Pupa.

The Terps (14-17, 4-11 ACC) scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on an A.J. Casario sacrifice fly and a wild pitch from Virginia starting pitcher Tyler Wilson, allowing Gerry Spessard to score from third.

Virginia scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, sandwiched between a three-run sixth.

Fullerton took the loss for Maryland, falling to 3-3 on the season. Fullerton allowed six runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. Wilson got the win for Virginia, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings.

David Poutier led the Terps with two hits. Gosselin went 3-for-4 with five RBIs for the Cavaliers and Hicks finished 4-for-6.

Spessard increased his school record with his 11th career triple in the fifth inning.

Maryland is home Tuesday evening to play in-state rival Towson.
