COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
David Poutier went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Mike Murphy hit a two-run home run in the first inning to lead the University of Maryland baseball team to a 7-2 victory against Towson Tuesday evening at Shipley Field.
In a game that was moved up two hours due to cold and windy weather, the Terrapins' pitching staff limited the potent Tigers offense to one earned run on only six hits. Sophomore left-hander Adam Kolarek pitched the first four innings for Maryland, allowing one run on two hits. Brett Harman and Ian Schwalenberg pitched two innings apiece and Dan Gentzler pitched a scoreless ninth.
After a perfect top of the first inning for Kolarek, Maryland's offense built an early lead in the bottom half. With one out, A.J. Casario was hit by a pitch and Murphy brought him home with a two-run homer to right-center field. Will Greenberg followed with a double down the right-field line to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and later scored on a balk by Towson starting pitcher Wes Shifflett.
The Tigers (14-14) scored a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double off the bat of Jason Stifler.
However, the Terps (15-17) took advantage of a pair of Towson errors in the bottom of the fourth to plate three runs with two outs.
With two outs and a runner on second, Matthew Murakami reached first when Towson first baseman Matt Collins misplayed a ground ball to his right. Poutier took advantage of the extra out, driving in a run with an RBI single through the left side of the infield. Casario added on to the rally with a double down the right-field line. A third run scored on an error by shortstop Gary Helmick.
Poutier added another RBI single in the sixth and the Tigers added a run in the eighth to account for the final margin.
Kolarek earned his first win of the season, improving to 1-1. Shifflett took his first loss of the season, falling to 1-1, allowing three runs in three innings.
Poutier's three-hit game was his sixth of the season, the most by any player on the Terps' roster. Murphy's home run moved him into eighth place in school history.
The Terps return to the field Friday evening to begin a three-game series with Virginia Tech.
