Maryland juniors A.J. Casario and Scott Swinson were selected on the third day of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Thursday as Casario went in the 38th round to the Chicago White Sox and Swinson went in the 46th round to the hometown Baltimore Orioles.
Casario, an outfielder who was drafted in the 27th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2006 draft, has hit .312 in three years with 20 home runs and 113 RBIs. Casario hit .319 this season with career highs in hits (66), RBIs (45), home runs (10) and slugging percentage (.522).
Swinson, a right-handed starting pitcher, is 9-11 in 26 starts with a 5.23 ERA and 130 strikeouts in two seasons for the Terps after transferring from George Washington following his freshman season. Swinson threw two complete-game shutouts as a sophomore in 2008, including a no-hitter at Delaware in the final game of the season.
As juniors, both Casario and Swinson have the option of signing with the teams that drafted them or returning to the Terps next season.
