Three Terps Earn Academic Accolades; Beck Shines In Summer League

Aug. 7, 2009

College Park, Md. - Seniors Mike Murphy and Dan Gentzler, along with junior Brett Harman, were among the 40 athletes named to the 2009 Academic All-ACC Baseball Team, as announced Thursday by Commissioner John D. Swofford.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained at least a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

This marks the third time Murphy, who majored in business management, was named to the list. Murphy started 53 of 54 games last season and led the team in home runs (12), total bases (120), doubles (17) and slugging percentage (.606). He also finished second on the team in RBI (43) and third in batting average (.318), on base percentage (.407), runs scored (40) and hits (63).

Gentzler was a key relief pitcher last year, leading the team in ERA (3.13), appearances (28), and saves (7). An economics major, Gentzler was relied upon heavily at the end of games, leading the team with 20 games finished.

Harman, a kinesiology major, provided great versatility for the Terrapins last year, starting 11 games and coming on in relief in nine. He finished the year with a 4-5 record and 5.99 ERA, led the team in strikeouts (75) and K/BB ratio (3.75), and finished second on the team in innings pitched (73.2).

Beck Named Pitcher of the Week in Ripken League

Sander Beck of Youse's Orioles was named the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 20 to July 27. Beck won both of his starts during the week to finish 6-1 for the season.

Beck, who will be a junior at Maryland in 2009-10, pitched seven shutout innings against the T-Bolts on July 20, scattering three hits and three walks while striking out three in a 4-2 win. He followed that up with 5.2 innings against the Bombers on July 26, his final start of the season, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in while striking out four. He did not walk a batter.

Beck dropped his team-leading ERA to 1.56 with his last two starts and kept opposing hitters to a .192 batting average on the season.
