Jan. 15, 2010

Final Stats

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland gymnastics team tied the highest team vault score in school history Friday night in its home opener against Temple, Cornell and Bridgeport. The Terps scored a 49.125 on the vault with freshman Ally Krikorian leading the way with a 9.950, a tie for the highest individual vault score in program history.

"Vault was amazing. That was a great way to start the meet," head coach Brett Nelligan said. "We talked about it in practice that we need to come out and be explosive on the first event and that would set the tone for the rest of the meet. That's what they did."

The Terrapins scored a 194.250 overall with eight career records broken along the way. Maryland started the night off on vault, where Krikorian and junior Abigail Adams scored 9.900 or better, while freshman Kesley Cofsky and sophomore Kyra Phillips each scored 9.800s. Adams' 9.900 was a new career high. The Terrapins claimed the top four finished on the vault.

"It was great for Ally to get that score, especially as a freshman," Nelligan said. "I think she had some nerves a little bit in the last meet, but it was good to be home here and she clearly felt more comfortable. She just let it fly and that's how she does it every day in practice."

Maryland kept its momentum heading into its uneven bars rotation with junior Kaitlyn Joseph, senior Brandi George and Adams each earning scores of 9.750. Five Terrapins filled the top five spots on the bars.

On balance beam, the Terps once again claimed the three top spots. George won the event with a 9.825, with Adams close behind with a 9.750 and Phillips earning a 9.725, which was a career high for her as well.

In their last rotation of the meet, the floor exercise, Adams won the event with a 9.825, while Cofsky, the other Terrapin all-arounder, finished with a 9.750.

Adams won the all-around competition with her score of 39.225, while Bridgeport's Lorraine Galow grabbed the second spot with her 38.250. Cofsky rounded out the top three with her score of 38.175.

Cornell finished in second with an overall score of 189.375, while Temple finished third with a 188.025. Bridgeport rounded out the field with a 187.350.

The Terrapins move to 3-1 on the year with the win and will hit the road to begin their EAGL competition season. They will head to Morgantown, W.Va. to face EAGL opponents No. 21 West Virginia and N.C. State on Jan. 24 at 1 p.m.
