RALEIGH, N.C. - The Maryland swimming and diving team split against NC State Friday with the women's team winning, 173-127, while the men stumbled, 190-108.

The women swept both relays with the team of Annie Fittin, Chelsey Eberwein, Addison Koelle and Megan Lafferty winning the 200 medley relay (1:45.42) and Fittin, Lafferty, Glover and Cross took the 200 free edition (1:34.53).

Freshman Victoria Cassidy had a solid start to her career at Maryland with a second-place finishes in the 1000 free (10:24.56) and 500 free (5:02.52). Other freshman earning top three finishes were Holly Rebovich (third in 1000 free) and Jenni Roberts (third in 100 free and first in 100 fly).

Ginny Glover captured both the 200 free (1:50.55) and 200 back (2:01.65) while finishing second in the 50 free. Annie Fittin won the 50 free (23.32) and Megan Lafferty took first in the 100 free (52.07). Alexa Hamilton began her junior campaign with wins in the 100 breast (1:05.06) and 200 breast (2:17.91). Addison Koelle took second in the 200 fly (2:03.58).

On the men's side, Maryland's large freshman class did well in its first action. Brad Dillon took second in the 1000 free (9:50.18) and 500 free (4:39.93). John Hauser was first in the 200 free (1:41.79) and Chris Turner was third in the 500 free.

Junior Andrew Relihan won the 200 IM (1:54.44) and finished second in the 200 free (1:42.53) and 200 back (1:50.27). Roger Dent captured the 200 fly (1:52.37) right in front of teammate Sean Stewart (1:52.80) while senior Mitch Challacombe touched the wall second in the 100 back (51.73).

"On the women's side, it's a great way to get the season started with a conference win," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "Overall I was pleased, we were led by our upperclassmen but also saw some good things from our younger swimmers.

"We had some good performances on the men's side but our depth wasn't good enough to get the result today. We are looking for better things tomorrow at Duke and we will see how this team is able to respond."

Maryland returns to action Saturday when it travels to Duke for a dual meet with the Blue Devils at 1 p.m.
