Maryland senior Aleksandar Damjanic finished sixth in the 100 fly to lead Maryland Friday night on day three of the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Damjanic swam a 48.06 Friday morning to land a spot in the finals. The senior secured an NCAA B-cut time of 48.29 in the evening session to wrap up Maryland's top individual point tally of the night. In addition to Damjanic, Roger Dent finished 18th in the C Finals with a time of 48.95.
Sophomore Andrew Relihan just missed qualifying for the 400 IM finals with a 3:53.26 in the preliminaries. Relihan took ninth in the finals with a B-cut showing of 3:52.88.
Maryland boasted three quality performances from a trio of freshmen as Nick Evans placed 17th in the 200 free (1:39.81) and fellow classmates Jon Szakelyhidi (56.94) and Jeff Winters (57.48) finished 17th and 20th, respectively, in the 100 breast.
Mitch Challacombe took 17th in the 100 back (48.35) in B-cut fashion to conclude Maryland's night individually. The junior chopped nearly a second and a half off his preliminary swim time (49.69) and broke his previously-held school-record (48.60)established last season at the 2009 ACC Championships in College Park.
The Terps ended day three with an eighth-place showing in the 400 medley relay. The team of Relihan, Szakelyhidi, Damjanic, and Challacombe wrapped up a time of 3:19.01.
Maryland rolls into Saturday in eighth place in the overall team standings and will begin the fourth and final day of competition at 11 a.m. with preliminary swims in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and the 1650 free.
