CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College starting pitcher Mike Dennhardt spread out six hits in a complete-game shutout and the Eagles defeated Maryland 4-0 Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Jack Cleary and Brandon Padula had two-hit days for the Terps, but Dennhardt pitched out of trouble each time Maryland threatened. The sophomore struck out five and walked two to improve his record to 2-5 this season.

The Eagles got the only run they would need in the third inning after Anthony Melchionda reached second base on an error. Melchionda advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Garret Smith and scored on shortstop Brad Zapenas' single through the left side. After walking Matt Hamlet, Maryland starter Eric Potter escaped further trouble by striking out Mickey Wiswall.

Boston College (14-15, 5-8 ACC) padded their lead with a single run in the fifth. Zapenas led off with a single to left field and after Potter struck out Robbie Anston, Hamlet drew his second walk. Potter got Wiswall to fly out to left field for the second out, but John Spatola's single to center field plated Zapenas.

Dan Gentzler prevented further damage with an outstanding defensive play. Matt Watson hit a shot down the first-base line, but Gentzler dove to his left to make the stop, got up and tossed to Potter for the third out.

The Terps (12-20, 3-10) were in good position to get a few runs back in the sixth inning. Padula led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Zapenas.

That brought up David Poutier, who showed bunt but pulled back and slapped the ball towards the gap between third base and shortstop. Zapenas got to the ball but didn't have a play, giving Maryland runners on the corners.

But Matt Marquis popped up to second base, Gentzler was put out on a bunt that moved Poutier to second, and Mike Rozak's hard-hit liner up the middle was caught by Eagles pitcher Mike Dennhardt.

The Eagles added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to complete the scoring.

Potter (2-5), who pitched well in 5 1/3 innings, took the loss. The junior gave up three runs, two of them earned, on five hits while striking out four and walking four.
