COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Cody Winiarski kept Maryland hitters at bay for eight innings and No. 2 Virginia broke open a close game with big sixth and seventh innings to defeat the Terps 11-2 Saturday afternoon in front of 757 fans at Shipley Field at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.

Winiarski (5-0) scattered five hits, walked one and gave up a fifth-inning homer to Maryland center fielder Matt Marquis, the lone run he allowed.

Starting pitcher Sander Beck (0-7) kept Maryland close for the first four innings by allowing just a single run. But Virginia's Steven Proscia hit a two-run home run in the fifth and the Cavaliers scored three more in the sixth and four in the seventh to take control.

Shortstop Chris Taylor went 3-for-5 to lead Virginia (34-9, 15-6 ACC) offensively, which completed a three-game sweep of the Terps (15-28, 4-17 ACC).

Marquis went 2-for-3, while Kevin Tehansky and Carter Bumgardner each got pinch-hit singles in the ninth. Tehansky scored Maryland's second run on Gary Schneider's RBI-single through the left side.

Prior to the game, a number of former Terrapins from the 1965, 1970 and 1971 ACC Championship teams were honored.

Tim Bichy, Jon Kressig, Ike Issacson, Bernie Walter were there from the 1965 team; Gene Hiser and Mike Baier represented the 1970 team; while Jim Norris, Mike Chaddick, Bob Grossman and Randy Kurtz were on the 1970 and 1971 teams.

Jack Jackson, Maryland's head coach from 1961-1990, threw out the first pitch. Jackson, with 471 wins to his name, is Maryland's all-time winningest baseball coach.

The Terps continue their six-game homestand when George Mason comes to town on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. matchup.
