Young Sparks Maryland Women to Win

LANDOVER, Md. - Sophomore Moriah Young won both throwing events to lift Maryland to the women's team victory Saturday at the Terrapin Indoor Invitational track and field meet held at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.

Young won the shot put at 45 feet, 3 inches, winning by more than seven inches over Elizabeth Ross of Hagerstown Community College. She went 55-9 to win the weight throw by 0.75 inches over teammate Kristen Batts.

Maryland finished with 140.5 team points on the women's side, outdistancing Hampton with 110 and Johns Hopkins with 49.5.

On the men's side, Maryland finished second with 99 points to place behind only UMBC with 105. Johnson C. Smith was third with 62 points. There were 31 teams that sent student-athletes to the meet.

Also for the Terrapin women, DeAnna Brown won the 60-meter dash in a career-best 7.52 seconds, the fourth-best time ever indoors at Maryland. D'Ambour Lewis was third in a career-best 7.59 that moved her into seventh all-time.

Ashley Cromartie went 2:57.00 to win the women's 1,000 meters, with Taylor Bumpas in third at 2:59.06.

Freshman Amina Smith won the women's high jump for the second straight week, clearing 5-10 to win. She has moved into fifth on the indoor all-time list for the Terps. All-American Kiani Profit won the long jump at 19-0.50, while also placing second in the 60 hurdles (8.41). Ashley Hendrix, who won the long jump last week at Penn State, picked up a third on Saturday at 18-7.25.

Greg Kelsey had a strong day for the Maryland men, winning the 800-meter run in 1:56.56, just ahead of teammate Sumanth Kuppalli (1:56.64). Kelsey doubled back to place second in the mile with an IC4A-qualifying time of 4:08.45. Kuppalli was fourth in the 1,000 at 2:32.02.

Chris Conway scored well in the 3,000, going 8:53.77, while freshman Josh Haghighi placed fourth in the 35-pound weight throw in a season-best 51-10.50.

Next week, the Maryland men are at the Navy Invitational, while the women are scheduled to compete at Saturday Night at the Armory in New York.
