Terps Reach Quarterfinals at ITA Regionals

NORFOLK, Va. - Sophomore Cristina Stancu and both Terrapin doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (USTA/ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

Stancu picked up two victories Sunday. In the morning session, Stancu defeated Penn State's Nina Sertic 6-2, 6-0. In the round of 16, Stancu was victorious over sixth-seeded Jeltje Loomans of William and Mary. Fourth-seeded Erin Vierra of Virginia is Stancu's opponent in the quarterfinals.

In the doubles draw, junior Ana Belzunce and sophomore Welma Luus defeated VCU's Josefin Hjertquist and Daria Yakauleva 9-7 to reach the quarterfinals. They will be joined by senior Jordan Hansbrough and Stancu who convincingly beat William and Mary's Anik Cepeda and Marlen Mesgarzadeh 8-2.

In other singles action Sunday, Belzunce lost to seventh-seeded Li Xi of Virginia in the round of 16, and Luus fell to eighth-seeded Petra Januskova of Penn State in the round of 32.
