COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland swimming and diving team started the 2011 Terp Cup with a bang, totaling more than 400 points on both the men's and women's side Thursday at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.

The Terps began Thursday night's finals with a season-best performance in the 200 free relay as Megan Lafferty, Carolyn Fittin, Melanie Busch and Ginny Glover took first (1:31.20). The 400 medley relay (Glover, Laura Flewelling, Lafferty, Fittin) also recorded its best time of the short season (3:40.48) in a first place showing.

Individually, Victoria Cassidy won the 500 free (4:46.50) and Jennifer Roberts captured the 200 IM (1:59.68). Megan Lafferty picked up her fifth straight 50 free win to start the season (22.64).

Freshman Kacie Ciampoli followed Cassidy in the 500 free, taking third (4:51.46). Fellow classmate Flewelling was second in the 200 IM (2:03.43) followed by Martha VanLieshout (fourth - 2:05.07), Meggie Schmidt (sixth - 2:06.48), Katie Hughes (seventh - 2:06.57) and Kelly Carroll (eighth - 2:06.59).

In addition to a first place finish from Lafferty in the 50 free, the Terps swept the top five spots in the event with Fittin (23.00), Glover (23.20), Elena Donald (23.61) and Busch (23.71).

On the men's side, Maryland finished second in both relays as John Hauser, Charlie Rommel, Jeff Winters and Andrew Relihan swam a season-best 1:22.16 and the unit of Bradley Dillon, David Speese, Winters and Hauser tacked on its best time at 3:18.75.

The Terps swept the top three spots in the 500 free as Alex Spina (4:30.31), Dillon (4:30.49) and Matthew Tynan (4:30.62) went 1-2-3. Sean Stewart was seventh (4:35.67).

Maryland also took home the top three finishes in the 200 IM as Hauser (1:48.85), Relihan (1:50.51), and Matt Meserole (1:52.53) provided the Terps with massive points in the event. Kyle Madley (fifth - 1:53.31) and Colin Stang (sixth - 1:53.35) also competed in the A final.

Hauser picked up his second top performance of the day with a win in the 50 free. The reigning ACC Performer of the Week touched the wall at 20.39. Rommel (sixth - 20.93) and Winters (eighth - 21.02) also garnered points.

Jack Clewlow won the 3-meter dive with 340.20 points.

Maryland heads back to the pool Friday morning for preliminary action. Below is a list of tomorrow's events.
