AUSTIN, Texas - Taylor Jungmann pitched a complete-game shutout and No. 6 Texas took advantage of Maryland's bullpen, scoring seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings combined, as the Longhorns topped the Terps 8-0 on Friday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Jungmann (1-0), a second team All-American last season, ran his career record to 11-0 at home. He was dominant after the first three innings, allowing just one hit in the final six frames while striking out nine on the day.

Sander Beck (0-1) excelled in the first five innings for the Terps, keeping the Longhorns off balance with a sharp fastball and a hard-breaking slider. Texas led 1-0 but had just two hits going into the sixth inning when a one-out walk to Mark Payton opened the door for a big inning.

Jonathan Walsh doubled to right field to give the Longhorns runners on second and third, and with Beck's pitch count at 88, head coach Erik Bakich made the move to the bullpen for right-hander Michael Boyden.

Texas' Cohl Walla singled on a bunt that plated Payton and Erich Weiss followed with a RBI single to right field to make it 3-0. After Boyden struck out Tant Shepherd for the second out of the inning, Jacob Felts singled up the middle to score another two runs. That would be more than enough for Jungmann, who threw 95 pitches in a game that lasted just two hours and 18 minutes.

"I thought Sander pitched extremely well," said Bakich. "I thought the way Sander pitched through five innings, we could've beaten anybody. He and Jungmann matched each other pitch for pitch and it was a great dual there for a while."

The Longhorns (1-0) added three more in the seventh off of Creighton Hoke. Tim Maitland was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Brandon Loy and Payton followed with bunt-singles to load the bases. After Hoke struck out two, he walked three more batters to force in runs. Charlie Haslup then came on and got Jordan Etier to fly-out to end the inning.

Tomo Delp was the lone Terp with a multi-hit game, recording singles in the third and ninth innings. Alfredo Rodriguez, Ryan Holland and Charlie White also had hits, but Jungmann retired 13 straight between the fourth and eighth innings.

"We just need to carry that aggressiveness and grit, the way we came out in the first couple innings and sustain that for nine innings," said Bakich.

Maryland's best chance to score came in the second inning after Holland led off with a single. After reaching third on an error and a fly-out, Holland attempted to come home when Curtis Lazar hit a grounded to shortstop. But Loy, the Texas shortstop, made a quick play and threw Holland out at home.

The Terps and Longhorns resume action in the four-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Eastern. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for seven innings, with the second game to go nine innings.
