COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Tomo Delp drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 13th inning and Maryland walked off with a 7-6 win over Army Friday night at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Maryland (3-3) rallied from a two-run deficit to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a Jack Cleary single that scored Jake Stinnett and Ryan Holland. After four scoreless innings, Cleary led off the 13th and was hit by a pitch, Alfredo Rodriguez reached base on a throwing error by Army pitcher Ken Jackson and Korey Wacker drew a walk to load the bases. Delp then stepped to the plate and took a 3-1 pitch low and inside to give the Terps the win.
In a game that lasted nearly five hours and featured a combined 27 walks and hit batsmen between the two teams, it was a fitting end. Delp was 2-for-4 with three walks in the game while Cleary had his second straight two-hit game.
Center fielder/pitcher Korey Wacker (1-0) threw four innings in relief and surrendered just one hit to earn the win. Maryland starter Sander Beck, who struck out a career-high 11, left with a 4-3 lead after six innings, but didn't factor into the decision.
The Terps trailed 3-0 early but got within one with a two-run fourth inning. Wacker and Delp led off with back-to-back singles and Brandon Padula reached on a fielder's choice to give Maryland runners at the corners. Michael Montville drew a walk to load the bases and with Stinnett at the plate, a wild pitch brought home Wacker and Padula came home when Stinnett grounded out to shortstop.
Maryland took a 4-3 lead in the sixth in part due to a pair of Army errors. Brandon Padula singled with one out and was pinch-run for by Jordan Hagel. Montville reached on an error by second baseman Zach Price, allowing Hagel to go to third. Stinnett's sacrifice fly to center field scored Hagel and a throwing error by cut-off man Kevin McKague allowed Montville to score all the way from second.
Army retook the lead in the seventh with a pair of runs on an infield single by Ben Koenigsfeld and added another run in the eighth for a 6-4 lead, setting up Maryland's comeback in the bottom half of the inning.
The Black Knights had the chance to make their lead bigger in the eighth, but Maryland reliever Charlie Haslup came on with the bases loaded and one out and got the Terps out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout. Haslup also pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two.
Maryland and Army continue the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
