COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland gymnastics team posted its second straight score of 195 as the Terps placed first at their home quad meet on the Comcast Center main floor Sunday afternoon.
Improving from last week's 195.300, the Terps won their second home quad meet with a season-best 195.450. Bridgeport placed second at 192.825 and Temple finished in third with a team score of 190.150. William & Mary, which competed in its second straight meet in College Park, rounded out the meet at 187.750.
"Competing [on the main floor] just adds a level of excitement," said head coach Brett Nelligan. "This is where we want to take the program. [We want to] show this kind of presentation to our fans and our judges. The girls get really excited being down here."
The Terps certainly excited their fans by starting strong on vault, scoring a season-high 49.175. Sophomore Ally Krikorian pulled down an event-winning 9.925 to lead all gymnasts. Sophomore Ally Krikorian, senior Abbey Adams and freshman Katy Dodds also pitched in scores of 9.8 or higher to give the Terps the lead after one event.
"We knew we wanted to get off to a strong start," said Nelligan. "Over the last two weeks, vault has been very strong for us. We talked about it before hand that we really had to set the tone for this meet on vault by going out and hitting vaults and Ally sticking it with the 9.925. That's how we did it."
Maryland followed up on uneven bars by once again hitting a meet-high. Led by Adams' 9.875, the Terrapins' 48.950 was 0.7 higher than Bridgeport- the second best score on the afternoon.
On balance beam, senior Jennifer Iovino hit an event-best 9.825. Freshman Elizabethe Manzi followed by tying her career mark at 9.750.
In the final rotation, the Terps hit a strong 48.675, showcased by Adams' meet-best 9.900 in the sixth and final spot.
With two scores above 195 in the last month, the Terps will head north to University Park, Pa. for a rematch with No. 10 Penn State along with conference rival North Carolina State.
"I think [we're sending] a message to everyone in the conference and across the country," said Nelligan. "We're a mid-195 team and we're going to keep pushing over the last few weeks of the season."
