COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Boston College's John Leonard held Maryland to three hits in eight-plus innings to outduel Terrapin starter Eric Potter, who took a no-hitter into the seventh, as the Eagles beat the Terps 4-1 Sunday afternoon.
Leonard took a no-hitter into the sixth, pitched into the ninth and was replaced after allowing a leadoff single to Maryland second baseman Ryan Holland. A senior right-hander, Leonard struck out five, walked two, gave up three hits and one run to improve to 3-1.
Potter (2-2) struck out four but also walked six and allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings. He lost the no-hitter to Garret Smith, the leadoff man in the seventh, and allowed two more hits and a run in the inning before being replaced by Charlie Haslup.
Boston College (8-9, 2-4 ACC) assumed the lead in the fifth by scoring two runs without a hit. Potter hit Mike Sudol with a pitch and issued a walk to Matt Hamlet. A sacrifice bunt by Tom Bourdon gave the Eagles runners on second and third. Sudol came home on a wild pitch and Hamlet scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Lawrence.
Bourdon chased Potter from the game with a RBI single in the seventh and the Eagles increased their lead to 4-0 in the ninth when Smith scored from third on a balk by Haslup.
Designated hitter Tim Kiene's single to right field scoring Holland gave Maryland (10-10, 1-5 ACC) its lone run in the bottom of the ninth. But Boston College's Smith, who moved from first base to the mound, was able to close the door after giving up the hit to Kiene.
Prior to Holland and Kiene's base knocks, freshmen Alex Ramsay and Kyle Convissar had the Terps' only hits.
Sunday was the second time Potter took a no-hitter into the seventh inning this season. The senior lefty also did it against Canisius on March 5 before also having it broken up by the leadoff man.
Maryland continues its seven-game homestand with a Tuesday contest against George Washington at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
