COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Charlie Haslup and Jimmy Reed combined to throw six scoreless innings out of the bullpen in the University of Maryland baseball team's series opener against No. 7 Florida State Friday evening at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium, but the visiting Seminoles claimed a 6-0 victory.
Florida State (20-6, 7-3 ACC) got on the board early, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on a James Ramsey RBI single and successful squeeze bunt by Jayce Boyd.
Both starting pitchers took control from that point as Florida State's Sean Gilmartin and Maryland's Chuck Ghysels put on a strikeout exhibition the next few innings. Gilmartin's first six outs all came via strikeout and fanned seven in the first three innings. Ghysels was equal to the task for the Terps (12-14, 1-9 ACC), however, also striking out seven through three.
The Seminoles extended their lead in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of five walks and a hit batsman in the inning to score four runs on one hit to grab a 6-0 lead. Neither team scored a run the rest of the game.
The Terps did a good job working the count, drawing three walks and two hit batsmen against Gilmartin, who came into the game with only four walks on his ledger for the season. However, Gilmartin was able to avoid trouble, tossing six shutout innings with nine strikeouts to improve to 6-0.
Ghysels was the losing pitcher, allowing five runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and six walks to fall to 1-3. Mack Waugh threw three shutout innings to earn his first save.
Boyd and Mike McGee drove in two runs apiece for the Seminoles. Aaron Etchison recorded two of Maryland's four hits.
The teams resume their series at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. David Carroll will take the mound for the Terps.
