COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
James Madison used nine pitchers to hold Maryland to four hits and one run, while first baseman Matt Tenaglia went 3-for-5 with three RBI, as the Dukes beat the Terrapins 6-1 Tuesday night.
Tenaglia ripped a two-run double down the right-field line in the first and had a run-scoring single in the third as the Dukes (26-12) took control early.
Freshman third baseman Jake Stinnett accounted for the lone Terrapin run with a home run in the second inning, his team-best fourth of the year, but the Dukes got the run back the next half inning.
With two outs in the third, Alex Foltz singled to right field and moved into scoring position on a fielding error by Maryland right fielder Jordan Hagel. Tenaglia then followed with a single up the middle to score Foltz and give the Dukes a 3-1 lead.
The Dukes increased their lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs on three hits and two Terrapin errors in the seventh. Cole McInturff led off the inning with a bunt single and moved to second on a Maryland throwing error. McInturff came around to score after Johnny Bladel bunted and Terrapin pitcher Jimmy Reed's throw to third went into left field. David Herbek singled to right field two batters later to bring in the second run of the inning.
Alex Valadja (4-3) was credited with the win for James Madison after striking out two and walking one in a scoreless inning of work. Jarred Tate, Scott Mayer, Ty McFarland and James Weiner each worked a perfect inning of relief as the Dukes allowed just two hits through the first seven innings.
Sander Beck (2-4) took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 4 1/3. The junior from Severna Park also struck out six and walked two. Shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to eight games.
Maryland returns to the road for a contest with Penn State on Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. LHP Eric Potter (3-5, 4.78) will start for the Terps, while the Nittany Lions will start LHP Mike Franklin (2-0, 3.63).
