UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State's Michael Glantz went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, Neal Herring held Maryland to one hit in 4 1/3 innings of relief and the Nittany Lions beat the Terps 4-2 Wednesday night.

Five of Penn State's seven hits were doubles, including Glantz's two-run double in the third that gave the Nittany Lions a 4-0 lead.

Charlie White ripped a two-out, two-run double to left field in the top of the fourth to bring Maryland within two, but the Terps left two runners on base in the inning and had just one hit over the final five innings.

Terrapin pitchers recorded 12 strikeouts - with starter Eric Potter and reliever Jeff Crosswhite each setting down five - but Penn State took advantage of three walks and five hits against Potter to score all of its runs in the first three innings. Prior to Wednesday, Potter had a 3-0 record with a 0.68 ERA in 26 1/3 innings against non-conference opponents.

The Nittany Lions got on the scoreboard in the second after Alex Farkes drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double by Ryan Clark. In the third, Joey DeBernardis doubled to center field with two runners on for the first run of the inning and Glantz followed two batters later with another double for a 4-0 Penn State advantage.

Jake Stinnett and Aaron Etchison singled with two outs in the fourth, Korey Wacker was hit by a pitch to load the bases and White doubled to make it 4-2, but the Terps were unable to draw closer.

Etchison led the Terps offensively with a 2-for-4 performance and Alfredo Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to nine games. On the mound, Crosswhite allowed just two hits in three scoreless innings and Charlie Haslup pitched two perfect innings of relief.

Potter (3-6) took the loss for Maryland (17-22), while Herring (1-0) earned the win for Penn State (22-12).

The Terps return home for a three-game series with Virginia Tech this weekend. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.
