COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
A day after Maryland allowed just three hits in a win over Saint Joseph's, pitching again steered the way to victory as Chuck Ghysels held George Mason to two hits in seven innings and the Terrapin offense provided early run support on the way to a 6-1 victory.
Ghysels, who struck out five, didn't allow a hit or issue a walk in the first three innings and his seven innings pitched set a career-high. Michael Boyden allowed one hit in the eighth and Korey Wacker pitched a perfect ninth as Maryland (19-25) held its opponent to three hits for the second straight day.
Alfredo Rodriguez used a pair of singles to drive in one run in the fifth and two in the sixth, while Charlie White, Kyle Convissar and Wacker, who started in center field, also had two hits apiece.
Mason (17-26-1) starting pitcher Michael Bowie retired the first seven batters he faced, but Maryland was able to break through with a run in the third inning. Jake Stinnett reached on an infield single, moved into scoring position on a groundout by Wacker and scored on White's single through the left side.
After Convissar increased the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth with a two out, run-scoring single, Mason scored its only run of the game in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI groundout by Shane Davis.
The Terps, however, used three straight singles by Wacker, White and Rodriguez to get the run back in the fifth and an inning later tacked on three more. The first run in the sixth came on a Mason error and Rodriguez later singled to center field with the bases loaded and two outs to score two more and make it 6-1.
That was more than enough support for Ghysels, who improved to 2-4 on the year with the win. Bowie (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits in four innings.
Brig Tison had two hits for Mason, which entered the game hitting .298 as a team.
Maryland returns to conference play this weekend as it travels to NC State. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday.
