CLEMSON, S.C. - Clemson scored six runs in the first three innings to chase Maryland ace David Carroll from the game in his shortest outing of the season as the Tigers used a potent offense to beat the Terps 12-3 Friday night.

Four Tigers had multiple-hit games, led by shortstop Brad Miller's 3-for-4 performance, and sophomore right-hander Jonathan Meyer (2-0) tossed 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to give Clemson its ninth straight home win.

Clemson (17-12, 5-8) came into the weekend second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in hitting at .314 and put up a five-run second inning on Carroll (5-2), who had allowed just two earned runs in his previous 21 1/3 innings.

Miller led off the second with a single through the left side and Will Lamb knocked in two runs with a single up the middle three batters later. John Hinson knocked in a run after Carroll issued his second walk of the frame and the Tigers added runs on a Maryland error and a single by Jeff Schaus for the quick 5-0 lead.

Miller turned a 10-pitch at-bat in the third into a double to center field and later scored on Spencer Kieboom's double to center, making it 6-0 Tigers.

Freshmen Tim Kiene and Austin Kilbourne both had two-hit games for Maryland (14-16, 2-11), which had its streak of three straight games with at least 10 hits snapped. The Terps finished Friday night's game with eight, half of them coming in a three-run fifth inning in which Kiene, Kilbourne and juniors Korey Wacker and Ryan Holland all had singles.

But Clemson responded with four runs in the sixth inning - capped off by Miller's two-run triple to right field - to take a 10-3 lead, before adding a pair of runs in the seventh to conclude the scoring.

Maryland and Clemson play game two of the three-game series Saturday at 7 p.m.
