STANFORD, Calif. -
No. 30 Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar continued her breakout first season with the Maryland women's tennis team Wednesday evening defeating Texas A&M's 26th-ranked Nazari Urbina 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women's Singles Championship at the Taube Tennis Center.
Sanchez-Quintanar improved to 17-4 and picked up her sixth win over a ranked opponent this season. Her performance, predominantly at No. 1 singles, helped lead the Terps to their first NCAA Championship appearance since 2006 and their best record since 1989. Sanchez-Quintanar is the first Maryland player to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships since Ramona But, also in 2006.
The junior has already garnered multiple accolades this season including ACC Women's Tennis Player of the Week (March 22), an All-ACC selection, and the ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch.
Singles play resumes tomorrow as Sanchez-Quintanar will take on UNC's 13th-ranked Zoe De Bruycker at 12:30 p.m. PST. Sanchez-Quintanar knocked off De Bruycker in their only previous meeting, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), March 25 when the Tar Heels defeated Maryland 5-2.
Sanchez-Quintanar will be busy as the NCAA Doubles Championship kicks off Thursday as well. She and Jordaan Sanford will face Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton of Northwestern in first round action at 6 p.m. PST. All action will take place at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
