Schimmel Names Captains for 2011-12 Season

June 15, 2011

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Head coach Sean Schimmel has announced captains for the 2011-2012 campaign. Seniors Ginny Glover and Erin Stout will lead the women while junior Alex Spina and sophomore Rob Maurer will guide the men.

Glover is a two-time All-American who will likely pace the Terps in and out of the pool with the graduation of senior Annie Fittin. The Ellicott City, Md., native competes in the freestyle and backstroke. Stout is a top IM/breaststroke competitor for the Terps and hails from Brookeville, Md.

Spina and Maurer will team up to captain a youth-laden men's unit. Spina has been steady in the freestyle and backstroke in his first two seasons in College Park. The junior is from Fairfax Station, Va. Maurer had a solid rookie campaign for the Terps. The Hershey, Pa., product is a freestyle specialist.

"I have had the opportunity to watch these student-athletes develop and mature over the last three seasons. Each of them embodies many of the characteristics we look for in great leaders," Schimmel. "They all want and have a sincere desire for these programs to continue their transformation into a championship program. They have commitment, confidence, composure and great character.

"Heading into my fourth season, it is also nice to acknowledge that we have numerous leaders on our team. Our culture has progressed to a point where we have many student-athletes that could have been named captain. I will also look to them for their continued leadership as we bring our program to that championship caliber."

Maryland begins the 2011-12 campaign with an intrasquad scrimmage Sept. 22.
