COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Sophomore John Hauser is taking full advantage of his summer in College Park. His enhanced training has paid off in the form of two trials cuts for the 2012 Olympics in London.
Hauser notched qualifying times in both the 50 and 100 free at the Canada Cup in Montreal. The Pottstown, Pa., native also swam the 200 free, 200 IM, and 100 fly at the international competition.
UMTerps.com caught up with Hauser recently and discussed his summer in College Park and qualifying to compete with some of the best swimmers in the world.
UMTerps: How has your training differed in preparation for the Olympic Trials in comparison to a normal summer regiment?
Hauser: I think training for Olympic Trials builds off the normal summer training regimen. It is all about the attention to small details that will help improve and help you stand out from the competition.
UMTerps: What advantages do you have from training at the University of Maryland's facilities this summer?
Hauser: The biggest advantage of training at Maryland was being able to train in a 50-meter pool. Before coming to Maryland, I never had the ability to train in a 50-meter pool which was a significant disadvantage when it came to training for long course competitions.
UMTerps: What do you most look forward to about competing in the Olympic Trials? What are you most excited about?
Hauser: What I look forward to the most is competing against the nation's top swimmers and I am excited to see the results from training and hard work.
UMTerps: What are your goals/expectations at the Trials?
Hauser: My two main goals that I hope to achieve at Trials are to improve my times and be as competitive as possible in the pool.
UMTerps: What do you hope to gain from competing at the Trials?
Hauser: The most important thing I hope to gain from competing at trials is to gain more experience competing at a larger and more competitive level.
UMTerps: How has the summer training helped develop you for the coming season at the University of Maryland?
Hauser: Training over the summer at Maryland has helped me improve my stroke technique as well as creating a strong base for the training and workouts of next season.
