COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Alfredo Rodriguez broke a scoreless tie with a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Ryan Holland and lifted Maryland to a 1-0 victory over St. Peter's Wednesday evening.
The win lifted the Terps (13-4) to a sweep of its doubleheader with the Peacocks. Maryland, which beat St. Peter's 9-0 in the first game, is now 6-0 in doubleheaders this season.
Both pitching staffs shut down the opponent through the first six innings, with four Maryland pitchers combining for a shutout, and St. Peter's Dom Macaluso tossing six scoreless frames.
But Maryland broke through in the seventh after Holland led off with a bunt single and outfielder Jordan Hagel was hit by a pitch to put men of first and second. That brought up Rodriguez, who singled to the gap in right-center on a 1-0 count to end it. It was Rodriguez's second game-winning hit this season - he also did it in a 2-1 win over East Carolina on Feb. 26.
With the win, the Terps improved to 13-1 in non-conference play. They're 7-0 and are outscoring their opponents 38-4 at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Senior reliever Korey Wacker (3-0) was credited with the win after pitching two scoreless frames. Wacker followed solid outings by starter Michael Boyden (two perfect innings), and relievers Will Bouey (2 1/3 scoreless) and Charlie Haslup (2/3 scoreless).
Macaluso (0-4) allowed the lone run on five hits in 6 1/3 and suffered the loss.
Maryland continues its homestand this weekend as No. 5 North Carolina visits College Park. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
