TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -
Florida State's Jayce Boyd went 4-for-5, Justin Gonzalez went 2-for-2 with a grand slam and the No. 1 Seminoles dispatched Maryland 9-2 Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.
Maryland pitcher Brett Harman was scratched from his scheduled start after coming down with food poisoning, and Michael Boyden earned the start for the Terrapins.
Boyden came into the weekend with a streak of 16 consecutive scoreless innings, and made quick work of Florida State (39-7, 21-2 ACC) in the first inning. He set down the side in order with a pair of strikeouts, but the Seminoles struck for four runs in the second and four more in the third.
That was enough run support for Florida State pitchers Mike Compton, Gage Smith and Bryant Holtmann, who combined to hold Maryland to five hits.
Boyd, the leading hitter in the Atlantic Coast Conference, got his first hit of the day in the second inning and later scored on Stephen Spradling's two-run single. Josh Delph followed Spradling with a two-run double, giving Florida State the early cushion.
Gonzalez gave the Seminoles command an inning later, sending a 1-0 offering over the wall in left-center field with the bases loaded for a 8-0 advantage.
Maryland reliever Charlie Haslup shut down Florida State in the middle innings by scattering four hits in 4 2/3 scoreless innings, but the Terps were unable to mount a significant rally.
Their lone runs came in the fifth inning, when Tim Kiene drove in Kyle Convissar on a bases-loaded fielder's choice. A Florida State error on the play also allowed Matt Bosse to score, but the Terps left two runners on in the inning.
Early on, it looked as if Maryland was primed for a better offensive day than Saturday, when it was held to one hit in the first five innings. The Terps had three in the first two innings on Sunday, but Jordan Hagel and K.J. Hockaday were both caught stealing.
Florida State then seized control in the bottom of the second, aided by two walks in the inning.
Compton improved to 9-0 on the season by striking out six and allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings as Florida State clinched its eighth ACC series victory in eight tries. The Seminoles have won all 12 of their weekend series this year.
Boyden (2-3) suffered the loss as Maryland fell to 29-22 overall and 8-18 in the ACC.
The final game of the series is set for Monday at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
