BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Maryland softball team split its two games Saturday, routing UMass 16-8, and falling to No. 14 Michigan, 10-2, in day two of the Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic.

In the first game, the Terrapins (2-1) jumped on the Minutewomen (0-2) for a 5-1 lead after the first inning. Sophomore Shannon Bustillos got the scoring started with an RBI single to left, then junior Melissa Mancuso hit a three-run double for the four-run lead.

The Terps added two more runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman Mandy Gardner singled to make it 7-1.

The Minutewomen added another run in the top of the third, but the Maryland offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Nikki Maier, who had been hit by a pitch. Senior Sara Acosta and Bustillos each scored a run off fielder's choice plays, then Gardner drove in three runs with a triple to center. Beards brought her in off an error and made it a 13-2 game.

UMass answered back with six runs off three hits and one Terrapin error in the top of the fourth. That cut the Terps' lead to 13-8. Senior Lexi Carroll came on to relieve sophomore Kaitlyn Schmeiser during the top of the fourth and pitched 2.2 innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Maryland added three more runs. Strange hit a two-run homer to left, then Acosta singled to score junior Amanda McCann, who reached on an error.

In their second game of the day, Maryland took a 1-0 lead over No. 14 Michigan (4-2) in the top of the first when McCann drew a lead off walk, then stole second and eventually scored on an error. The Wolverines took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the first off a triple with a runner on first, then a double.

Michigan made it an 8-1 game in the bottom of the second with six runs off six hits and a Maryland error.

The Terps tacked on their second run of the game when Mancuso hit an RBI single to center.

Michigan added one run in the bottom of the third and one in the bottom of the fourth for a 10-2 win.

The Terrapins will take on LIU Brooklyn at 1 p.m. Sunday. GameTracker live stats will be available. The Terps beat the Blackbirds 5-3 Friday.
