March 9, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Maryland sophomore Thea LaFond finished 10th in the pentathlon Saturday at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Women's Track & Field Championships, held at Randal Tyson Track at the University of Arkansas.

LaFond finished with a total of 4,094 points to finish 10th out of a field of 16, missing eighth place by only 16 points. LaFond began the day by finishing second in the high jump (5-11.25), which was her personal best mark. She took ninth in three events: the 60-meter hurdles (8.70), the long jump (5.77m) and the 800-meter run (2:20.65). In the fifth event, she placed 14th in the shot put (10.07m).

The 10th place finish today capped off a fantastic year for LaFond, in which she claimed gold in the pentathlon earlier this season at the ACC Championships and was selected as the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Field Athlete of the Year.

Fellow teammate Amber Melville also competed at the NCAAs, taking 11th in the high jump out of 16 jumpers.
