Terps Complete Opening Day of Midlands

EVANSTON, Ill.  – Four Maryland grapplers advanced to the quarterfinals in Session I, but were unable to nab places in the semifinal round during the night session at 52nd Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Monday in Evanston, Ill.

The Terps (4-7, 0-3 Big Ten) have five competitors still alive in consolation action, which will begin tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Welsh-Ryan Arena. No. 7 Geoffrey Alexander (133), No. 17 Shyheim Brown (141), Lou Mascola (157), Josh Snook (174) and Dawson Peck (285, unattached) are the Terps' remaining representatives.

Brown started off the day strong with two consecutive 16-0 technical falls over Old Dominion's Jacob Kingett and Samuel Gross of Northwestern. The sophomore virtually duplicated his performance in both bouts, using a quick first period takedown to gain control before flashing dominant tilts to gain multiple near falls.

Seeded seventh, Brown took on the 10th seed Lehigh's Joseph McKenna in the third round. After a three tight periods, Brown struck first with a takedown in SV-1 to gain a 3-1 win. He would subsequently drop his quarterfinal match to the No. 2 seed Devin Carter of Virginia Tech.

Alexander's day began with a bye before a hard fought 11-9 decision win over Brance Simms of South Dakota St. to make the third round. The redshirt junior, seeded No. 5, shutout Dominick Malone of Northwestern, 8-0, to advance to the quarterfinals. He fell 12-1 to Illinois' Zane Richards to end the day.

After dropping his opening bout to Doug Welch of Purdue, Mascola stayed alive in the 157-pound consolation bracket with four consecutive wins. The redshirt junior earned a major decision against Dustin Schultz of Purdue, a decision over Edinboro's Chase Delande, a tech fall over Devin Geoghegan of Old Dominion and a decision over Jake Danishek of Indiana.

Snook swept to the quarterfinals with two close wins. A 2-1 decision over Steven Schneider of Binghamton and a 3-1 win in sudden victory against Josh Thomson put Snook in the final eight. He fell to Johnny Sebastian of Northwestern in the quarters.

Peck, wrestling unattached, is the final Terrapin alive in Evanston. He defeated Chris Johnson of SIU-Edwardsville and UW-Whitewater's Anthony Edgren to make the quarters before losing to Connor Medbery of Wisconsin.

The Terps are back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. Action can be seen live on BTN2GO with live stats available via Track Wrestling.
