Maryland Well Represented on PG Top Prospect Lists

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Perfect Game has released its top prospect lists for the 2014 summer collegiate season for the top-20 leagues in the country and several Maryland baseball players have made the cut.

Six Terps have been selected from the Cape Cod League, which is rated as the top collegiate summer league in the country by Perfect Game, led by junior third baseman Jose Cuas. The Brooklyn native was rated the 51st-best prospect in the league after totaling six RBI and two doubles in 22 games with the Wareham Gatemen.

Maryland closer Kevin Mooney came in at No. 63 on the list. After tying a program record with 13 saves this past spring, Mooney went 2-1 with three saves for league runner-up Falmouth Commodores, while striking out 19 in 16-2/3 innings. Left hander Jake Drossner checked in at No. 83. The junior finished 1-2 with 10 strikeouts in 17-2/3 innings with the Harwich Mariners.

The group is rounded out by junior righty Jared Price (No. 99), junior left hander Zach Morris (No. 178) and junior catcher Kevin Martir (No. 185). Price had 19 strikeouts in seven appearances for Falmouth. Morris had 18 Ks in 23-2/3 innings for the Brewster Whitecaps, while Martir hit .225 with the Whitecaps.

Lefty Alex Robinson, already named the top prospect in the New England Collegiate Baseball League by Baseball America, was selected as the top prospect by Perfect Game as well. An all-star in the NECBL, Robinson managed to strike out twice as many batters (26) as he walked (13) in 21 innings for the Keene Swamp Bats. Robinson posted a 1-1 record with a 3.37 ERA in eight appearances (four starts).

Perfect Game named 20 prospects in the Cal Ripken League, five of which were Terps led by freshman lefty Willie Rios at No. 3. Rios helped the Baltimore Redbirds repeat as CRCBL champs along with sophomore catcher Nick Cieri (No. 8).

Cieri hit .325, the sixth-best average in the league, and added seven doubles with 18 RBI. On the mound, Rios pitched 27-2/3 innings with 37 strikeouts to 15 walks to go along with a 3.90 ERA.

Sophomore Brandon Lowe (No. 6) tied for the league lead in RBI (29), tied for fourth in home runs (4) and ranked fifth in batting average (.329) helping lead the Bethesda Big Train to the regular season league title.

Freshman Justin Morris (No. 10) and sophomore left hander Tayler Stiles (No. 18) joined Lowe on the Big Train. Morris hit .345 in 12 games with three doubles and four RBI, while Stiles posted a 5-1 record with a 2.17 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 29 innings pitched.
