RALIEGH, N.C. – Shyheim Brown finished second at 149 pounds to lead the Maryland contingent at the Wolfpack Open Sunday afternoon.
Billy Rappo (141) and Josh Ugalde (165) finished third in their respective weight classes. Maryland also saw multiple other wrestlers win matches at the tournament.
Brown's run to the final began with an 18-3 tech fall over Andrew Hoskins of Campbellsville. Brown then defeated American's Cole Moseley, 17-4, before taking out Sam Melikian, 7-1, in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Brown got past second-seeded Mitch Finesilver of Duke, 14-7, before forfeiting the final.
Rappo started his run at 141 pounds with a bang, pinning unattached Jordan Eley at 4:44. Rappo tech falled teammate Nick Casella before defeating Michael Sprague of American, 4-3.
Rappo dropped his semifinal match before rebounding to top American's Tyler Scotton, 6-3, in the third-place bout.
At 165 pounds, Ugalde rolled past The Citadel's Zachary Appleby, 16-0, in the opening round before upsetting second-seeded Mitchell Wightman of American, 4-3, in the round of 16. Ugalde then defeated Old Dominion's Blake Sutherland by major decision.
Ugalde lost in the semifinals but won the third place contest by 5-2 decision.
In other action, Breandan Coughlin (125) and Youssif Hemida (285) made the quarterfinals. Jakob Restrepo (157), Danny Boychuck (149), Adam Whitesell (141) and RJ De George (141) all made the round of 16.
Maryland returns to action next Sunday at the Grapple at the Garden in New York City. The Terps will take on Illinois and Hofstra.
