EVANSTON, Ill. – Redshirt senior Lou Mascola (157) secured two victories Tuesday to earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the 157-pound bracket at the 53rd Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Tuesday evening. Third-seeded Mascola led for most of the match against No. 6 seed Chad Walsh of Rider, but a late pin for the Bronco at 6:21 denied him a spot in Wednesday's semifinals. The Terps are currently 19th in the field with 24 points.
The East Hanover, N.J. native opened up the day at Welsh Ryan Arena vs. Jordan Kutler of Lehigh, and found himself down 2-0 at the end of the first period on a late takedown. Mascola battled back, going up 4-2 before sealing a 6-5 decision to advance.
He then faced No. 14 seed Chad Pyke (NC State) in the round of 16, getting ahead 2-0 on a takedown towards the end of the first period. A series of escapes had the score a 3-2 in the third, but Mascola took care of business with a late takedown to get a 5-2 decision and a spot in the quarters. Mascola is scheduled to wrestle fifth-seeded Tyler Berger (Nebraska) in round six of the consolation bracket tomorrow.
Redshirt sophomore Dawson Peck put together a solid day on the mat, earning three pins while advancing to the sixth round of the consolation latter. Peck earned a fall over Chris McDermand (American) at 4:43 in first match, before being bounced by No. 5 seed Billy Smith (Rutgers) by decision, 8-2.
Peck got back in the win column with his second pin of the day in session two, putting away Dean Broghammer (Grand View) at 6:49 in his first consolation match. The Chambersburg, Pa. native then faced Duece Rachal (Illinois) in the fifth round, and trailed 2-4 heading into the second period. Peck regained control by the start of the second, and flipped Rachal on his back to complete the trio of falls at 3:23. He will face No. 3 seed Blaize Cabell (Northern Iowa) tomorrow.
Redshirt senior Josh Snook (184) showed well against All-American Timothy Dudley (Nebraska) in his opening match of the day, but surrendered a 6-0 decision in his first 184-pound match since November 8. He then rattled off two wins in the consolation bracket, first topping Derek Hillman (Eastern Michigan) by decision, 4-3. A riding point then secured a 3-2 decision for Snook in his final match of the first session vs. Norman Conley (Indiana). His tournament came to an end at the hands of No. 8 Nicholas Gravina (Rutgers) by major decision.
Fellow redshirt-senior Geoffrey Alexander (133) got off to a solid start on the day, pinning Trey Aslanian (Princeton) at 5:50 for his first fall of the year. He was then edged in the round of 16, dropping an 11-10 decision to Cameron Kelly (Ohio University).
