Day 1 Recap – Midlands Home Page
EVANSTON, Ill. – Redshirt-sophomore Dawson Peck (285) placed sixth in the field at the 53rd Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Wednesday evening. The Chambersburg, Pa. native put together a solid run at the two-day event, going 5-3 overall with a tournament-best four pins. Peck receieved the Midlands Most Falls Award for his efforts, which included three pins on day one. He has now placed in two consecutive seasons at the tournament after a fifth place overall finish in 2014.
Peck faced No. 3 Blaize Cabell in his first match Wednesday, and was tested early by the Northern Iowa heavyweight. He fell behind 2-0 on an early takedown, but managed to get away with an escape to cut it to 2-1. Cabell remained in control with a pair of takedowns in the second period, but Peck kept his composure and continued to cause Cabell problems
Peck used his long reach to keep the Panther wrestler at bay, and made the most of his opportunity from the top in the third period. He finally managed to get a hold of him, and inverted his shoulders for a pin at 6:02.
He then advanced to the seventh round of the consolation latter, where he faced No. 9 Joseph Fagiano (Cal Baptist) for a chance to place. After a scoreless first period, Peck got a reversal from the bottom and four-point near fall to take a 6-0 advantage. Fagiano managed a reversal as well, but Peck continued to dominate from the top building up several minutes of ride time for an eventual 7-2 decision.
Peck suffered his first loss in four matches in the eighth round of consolation, surrendering a fall to No. 4 seed Sam Stoll (Iowa) at 6:42. The Terp heavyweight was ahead 4-2 after the second, but a late move from Stoll sealed the win to bounce Peck to the fifth place match. The heavyweight returned for his final match of the tournament in the evening session in a rematch against No. 5 seed Billy Smith of Rutgers. The Scarlet Knight came out on top again, using a takedown, reversal and penalty point to notch a 5-0 decision.
Redshirt senior Lou Mascola (157) dropped a sudden victory to Nebraska's Tyler Berger in his lone consolation match Wednesday. The two 157-pounders were evenly matched through the first three periods of regulation, tying 4-4 before the first OT period. It was there Berger was awarded a takedown and near-fall by the official to secure an 8-4 win and advance.
The Terps finished with 33 team points to place 21st overall. The Maryland wrestling program will return to competition on Friday, January 8 when the team travels to face Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn.
