COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After an opening weekend split, the No. 63 Maryland women's tennis team returns to action at No. 74 William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. Sunday.
The Terps (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) moved up five spots in the ITA's rankings after a solid showing at the ITA Season Kickoff in Gainesville, Fla. Maryland ran past No. 61 Georgia State, 4-0, before falling short against No. 2 Florida in a very competitive matchup.
Sophomore Alexandra Stanova leads Maryland from the No. 1 singles spot and sports a 9-7 record after play during the fall season. She ended the fall ranked No. 9 in the ITA Atlantic Region. Junior Nataliya Bredikhina is 6-5 and is projected to play at the No. 2 spot for Maryland.
In doubles, Stanova and sophomore Olivia Gaudreault are ranked No. 48 nationally in doubles. The Terps will also rely on the solid play of senior Welma Luus, freshman Ekaterina Tour and sophomore Olga Bredikhina.
William & Mary enters Sunday's showdown with a 3-1 record, which helped it enter the national team rankings for the first time this season. The Tribe's lone defeat came to No. 4 Duke, 4-3.
Leeza Nemchinov was named CAA Player of the Week for her play in the Tribe's 5-2 victory over Penn State. The doubles duo of Maria Groener and Olivia Thaler was named to the CAA Team of the Week after starting dual match action with a 4-0 record.
