ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Maryland track and field team dominated the Navy Sweetheart Invitational to the tune of 201 team points and a first place team showing at the Wesley Brown Field House Thursday.
The Terrapins won multiple events and placed multiple competitors in each. Host Navy finished second with 167 points.
In the 60m hurdles, Maryland swept the top three positions with sophomore Lisa Meneau leading the charge in 8.80. Noella Anyangwe and Jacqueline Tape finished just behind Meneau, and Taylor Tucker placed fifth.
Maryland similarly dominated the long jump, nabbing the top three finished. Amber Melville tied the Field House record with a jump of 5-10.75 to win the competition, Thea LaFond (5-8.75) and Izzy Laurel (5-5) also had strong competitions.
In the throws, Chioma Onyekwere swept the shot put and weight throw titles with Claudia Ababio placing second in both events. Onyekwere destroyed the venue record in the weight throw with a toss of 19.02.
The 800m race again saw multiple Terrapins in the top-three. Charlotte Staver won the event in a lifetime best 2:16.27 while Maeve McCoy grabbed third. In the 1000m, Emily VandeWater pushed her way to first place in a time of 2:55.56. Catherine Sheffo took the mile in 5:07.01.
Senior Dominique Davis rolled to a win in the 400m notching a time of 57.49. Tucker also ran well in the event. In the 60m dash, freshman Chandler Baxter recorded a time of 8.14 to finished second. Adrienne Minor also nabbed a top-five finish.
Freshman Kayla Richardson easily won the long jump with a mark of 5.45m while Peyton Wade won the Pentathlon. The Terps swept the three of the top four positions in the sprint relay.
Maryland is back in action Feb. 27-28 at the Big Ten Championships in Geneva, Ohio.
