COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland women's tennis team improved to 2-2 on the season, claiming victory over the Ladyjacks of Stephen F. Austin, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
"We had to play without Alex so everyone moved up," head coach Daria Panova said. "Katya started the third set knowing that it's 3-3 and the match is on her and did an amazing job closing."
Terp duo senior Welma Luus and junioor Nataliya Bredikhina defeated Dhanielly Quevedo and Malena Gordo, 6-1, giving advantage to the Terps in doubles. Sophomore Kristina Hovsepyan and freshman Ekaterina Tour downed Denise Maxl and Macarena Acosta, 6-3, clinching the opening point for Maryland.
In singles play, Terp junior Olga Bredikhina notched a 6-0, 6-1 win in her match against Dhanielly Quevedo. Luus picked up the second of the Terps' singles wins, defeating Valeria Terentyeva, 6-1, 7-6 (5-0).
Ekaterina Tour picked up a win over SFA Ladyjack Denise Maxl, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to clinch the match for Maryland.
Maryland returns to action Sunday against No. 6 Baylor with play scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
