ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 11 Maryland baseball team fell to Michigan, 5-2, at the Wilpon Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins (18-7, 4-2) fell behind early and were unable to rally in the later innings. Sophomore Tayler Stiles was the highlight, pitching seven innings of two-hit relief.
After the Terps loaded the bases in the top of the inning, Michigan chased Maryland starter freshman Willie Rios in the first. Kyle Jusick's bases clearing three-RBI double did most of the damage as the Wolverines put up five runs in the frame.
The Terps grabbed a couple runs in the third. After consecutive walks issued to sophomore Brandon Lowe and freshman Kevin Smith, Sophomore Nick Cieri singled to plate Lowe. Junior Jose Cuas then dropped a single down the left field line to score Smith and make the score 5-2 Michigan.
Stiles pitched a sterling game in relief of Rios, at one point retiring 16 straight Michigan batters. Junior Alex Robinson pitched a spotless inning of relief in the eighth.
In the ninth, Kevin Martir singled, but the Terps were unable to get anything going and fell 5-2.
Maryland returns to action at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Wednesday against James Madison. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
