COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore left hander Tayler Stiles threw six innings of two-run ball, but the No. 16 Maryland baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Iowa at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
Iowa starter Blake Hickman took a no hitter into the sixth against the Terrapins (24-9, 8-3), who were unable to rally late against the Hawkeye bullpen.
After three scoreless innings, Iowa struck first in the top of the fourth. Jake Mangler doubled to right center for advancing to third on a groundout. Aaron Daniel Moriel notched a sac fly to drive in the first run of the game.
The Hawkeyes grabbed another run in the seventh on a Mangler single. Maryland responded in the bottom half. Kevin Martir singled to left before Jose Cuas slapped a single to left center. Anthony Papio made it a one-run game with a single to right that plated Martir.
Iowa nabbed an insurance run in the ninth. Nick Roscetti singled to left followed by a sacrifice bunt that moved him to second. Eric Toole then intentionally walked before Mangler was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tyler Peyton then flied out to drive in a run and make the score 3-1.
Nick Hibbling closed out the game for the Hawkeyes, who moved to 7-1 in the Big Ten.
Maryland returns to action Sunday at noon at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
